Learning outcomes

Selected learning outcomes of the education of the program of studies.

On completion of the Second degree program of studies at the ASC Warsaw University the graduate:

(knowledge)
1. knows English terminology of cultural and American studies on advanced level;
2. identifies complex relations between various structures of the American society and the legal, economic and political order of the United States;
3. has knowledge of terminology that is organized, deepened, and leading to specialization, as well as knowledge of theory, methodology, history, literature, film and media studies, history of philosophy, politics, economy and geography, in the extent indispensable for the American studies;
4. demonstrates organized, deepened, leading to specialization, detailed knowledge about culture of the United States of America in the area of political and social history, history of literature, history of art, history of ideas, political culture, audio-visual culture and economic culture;
5. manifests deepened knowledge on the relations between cultural and American studies and cultural anthropology, social sciences, regional studies, as well as in the field of history and history of literature, which enables interdisciplinary approach and research.

6. can conduct research, analyze, assess, select and use information from various sources in order to formulate critical judgments on social (cultural, political and economic) phenomena in the United States of America;
7. presents deepened skills of formulating research questions, which includes analyzing works of other authors, synthesizing various ideas and views, using right research methods and tools; is able to compile and present results of investigation; approaches complex problems of cultural and American studies in an original manner.
8. is able to acquire knowledge independently, develop research skills and take steps leading to further expanding own expertise and conducting professional career.

9. adequately identifies and solves dilemmas related to the importance and the role of the American culture in understanding social-cultural phenomena in the world and to performing tasks of American and cultural studies profession
10. systematically follows cultural events, participating in shows and film festivals, exhibitions, discussions and theatrical plays related to the American culture.

Duration of studies with ECTS credits and number of semesters

Second cycle studies programme:
• the length of studies is 4 semesters
• Students’ progress is evaluated annually: each year a student shall achieve 60 ECTS credits.
• the number of ECTS credits during the six consecutive semesters is as follows: 28, 32, 25, 35.
• Total number of ECTS credits = 120

The American Studies Center’s program is not based on standards of language teachers

Number of ECTS credits for the learning outcomes achieved in different types of courses:

Second cycle studies programme:
• Fundamental courses: 40 ECTS (module of lectures obligatory for all students consist of 10 lectures).
• Practical courses: 4 ECTS (proseminar)
• Module elective courses: 76 ECTS (including: 12 elective seminars for 36 ECTS; MA seminar and preparing the final thesis for 32 ECTS; open scientific meetings for 2 ECTS)

Information about internships: no internship required within the studies programme (the programme complies with the National Qualifications Framework).
