Socio-cultural problems of Israeli 3600-7-HE3-ZSKI(L)

The course acquaints the students with the history of the State of Israel and its most important social and political issues as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the internal problems of the state (new immigrants, the military, the place of religion in social and political life, attitudes to the peace process in the Middle East, etc). Major issues will be supported by studying the texts of culture: Israeli movies, music, literature.

During the course, the following topics will be discussed:
- The structure of Israeli society- differences and conflicts
- Kibbutz
- Living in the shadow of war (military, security, relations with neighboring countries, spy scandals)
- Israeli Arabs and Palestinians
- Israel as a melting pot
- Attitudes to the Holocaust
- The situation of women in Israel (in the army, in religious and secular communities, in the Arab community)
- Israel as a Jewish and democratic state
- Sabra Myth
- Modern Hebrew literature
- Israeli cinema
- Music, theater, dance
