Upon completion a student can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure etc; s/he can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst traveling in an area where the language is spoken; s/h can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest; s/he can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Assessment criteria
Classes will take the form of exercises. The following teaching methods will be used: elements of lecture, practical language learning, and work with text. Language learning materials in the form of textbooks, dictionaries, texts, and audio and audio-visual recordings will be used.
The final assessment will consist of:
1. Final test consisting of open-ended and single-choice questions.
2. Homework - completion of the task, linguistic correctness, and punctuality of the work is assessed. Completion of all work is the first condition for admission to the final test.
3. Attendance control - three absences per semester are allowed. Attendance in class is the second condition for admission to the final test.
