Translation of texts related to political and social issues B language - Spanish 3200-M2-1TPSBH
The purpose of the course is to teach students the skills and abilities within the field of written translation from Spanish into Polish and from Polish into Spanish, extend their knowledge and vocabulary related to political and social issues as well as acquaint them with the conscious usage of traditional and Internet sources.
Topics of classes:
1) Political regimes and social norms: translation of press texts
2) Electoral systems and public opinion: translation of divulgative texts
3) Public administration and social initiatives: translation of scientific texts
4) Political parties and trade unions versus social policy (education, employment, housing, culture, etc.): translation of electoral materials and programmes
5) Political ideologies and doctrines versus social problems (violence, inequalities, exclusion, etc.): translation of programmes of political parties and propagandistic texts
6) National, regional and international organisations versus social policy (demography, migrations, health, security, etc.): translation of transcripts of conversations and interviews
7) National, regional and international agreements and treaties versus social problems (criminality, poverty, pathologies, etc.): translation of speeches and appeals
8) Wars and armed conflicts as a political and social phenomenon: translation of communications, announcements and diplomatic notes
9) Legal acts: translation of selected legal acts
10) Mass media and Internet communities versus political life: translation of Internet blogs and discussion forums
11) National and international politics versus social life: translation of satirical texts
Didactic methods:
- written translations (individual and group) performed as classwork and homework (presentation of one translation performed as homework)
- a vista translations (short texts or parts of texts)
- discussion of own and others’ translations (assessment of the adequacy of the translation and translation strategies adopted)
- analysis of source texts and translation errors
- preparation of glossaries and terminological databases
- short control tests on the vocabulary learned during the classes (optional)
Students’ workload:
- 30 contact hours in the classroom (1 ECTS)
- 30 hours of independent work outside the classroom (1 ECTS)
- 60 hours in total (2 ECTS)

Learning outcomes
Developing translation competence within translation of specialist, para-specialist and non-specialist written texts regarding political and social issues (translation from Spanish into Polish and from Polish into Spanish).
After completing the course, students:
- know Spanish and Polish specialist, para-specialist and non-specialist vocabulary and expressions related to political and social issues
- understand basic questions and problems related to political and social issues, especially in the context of Poland and Spain
- can translate in writing from Spanish into Polish and from Polish into Spanish various types of texts regarding political and social issues, consciously using traditional and Internet sources
Assessment criteria
Requirements and evaluation criteria:
- attendance at the classes
- active participation in the classes
- ongoing preparation for the classes (presentation of one translation performed as homework)
- passing of the lexical control tests (optional)
- preparation of glossaries and terminological databases
- continuous evaluation of the translations performed and (optionally) preparation of a semestral translation project or translating a text in the classroom (during the last class)
Grading scale for translation works:
- 0-60% - unsatisfactory
- >60-70% - satisfactory
- >70-75% - satisfactory plus
- >75-85% - good
- >85-90% - good plus
- >90-100% - very good
Attendance check:
- students are entitled to three unjustified absences per semestre
- three latenesses of more than fifteen minutes are considered as an additional absence
