Philosophy 3102-LFIL
According to the philosophy of the ancient Greece we’ll concern theories of the founders of metaphysics: Socrates, Plato and Aristotle with the refernces to stoicism.
In the next part of the lecture will be presented selected topics in the field of medieval philosophy represented by such thinkers as St. Augustine (theocentrism, City of God), St. Anselm (proof of the existence of God), St. Thomas (social and political thought, Aristotelian heritage).
With regard to the modern era will focus on the philosophy of Machiavelli (theory of power), Descartes (dualism of mind and body, methodical skepticism), Hobbes, Locke`a, Rousseau (conceptions of the social contract, empiricism in epistemology), Kant (transcendental philosophy, ethics of duty, Country of Pure Reason) and Hegel (philosophy of history as a philosophy spirit).
Last of all: philosophy of Marx and Nietzsche.

Learning outcomes
Student knows and understands basic philosophical trends and terms as well as the role of philosophical reflection in culture shaping processes, can indicate sources of cultural specificity of the Western culture. An insight into the history of the Western philosophy effects deeper understanding of the history of Western Europe and understanding of the contemporary age. The analysis of diametrically different philosophical constructions may be good exercise of creative and critical thinking.
Student has awareness of philosophical roots of the Western culture and its specificity, so can counteract resentments and prejudices.
Assessment criteria
Oral examination after second semester. Students will obtain a list of possible questions.
