Theory of social communication 2700-L-DM-Z1TKSP
Lecture topics include presentation of the major issues of general knowledge about communication and the general characteristics of interpersonal communication, group, network and media activities in the social system. Topics:
1. Communication tools (signs, codes, languages, media, communicative competence).
2. Communication as interaction (interaction, taking over the role of another identity, shaping the image).
3. Interaction as a discourse (the claims, types of interaction, communication action as a discourse).
4. Construction of transmission (horizontal transmission and frame structure, narrative conventions and schema dramatic situation, the characteristics of species, the mythical story structure).
5. Interpersonal communication (relationship building, relationship and ties, the dynamics of interaction, cognitive and persuasive basis for interaction).
6. Interpersonal Communication in a small group (the group as a communication environment, the types and life cycle groups, decision-making within the group).
7. Communication Interaction in small groups (leadership and authority in the group, the structure of group relations and the effectiveness of the group).
8. Network Communications (main characteristics).
9. Mass media (broadcasting institution types, orientation, communication, communication functions, the doctrinal basis and framework for action).
10. Mass Communication in a democratic political system (the functioning of the media in the "normal" - the ratio of politicians to the media, and media coverage of politics, the role of media in election campaigns and crisis situations).
11. Mass Communication in the market economy (the media as part of and participant in the market, commercialization, the role of advertising in the media and the operation of the market, myths in advertising).
12. Mass Communication and power relations in society (the theory of hegemony and "manufacture consent", the unit as a citizen and consumer, a sense of subjectivity).
13. The impact and effects of media (the media impact on social interactions, two-step flow theory, the theory of spiral of silence, the effect of a third person).
14. The impact and effects of media (agenda setting, knowledge gap, uses and gratifications approach, the theory of reception, the cultivation of the mainstream culture).

Learning outcomes
After completion of the course (lecture and exercises) the student:
KNOWLEDGE
1. knows what it is discourse and what is the role of different formulas and conventions quality in the construction of communications, describing reality, expressing emotion and decoding messages critical of various audience,
2. knows the main features differentiating the various types of communication society and their corresponding media and communication channels,
3. knows the basic theories explaining the role of self-presentation and design own identity through a variety of communication behaviors in different situations and communication systems,
4. knows how to shape the dynamics of interaction and community building in the processes of communication within interpersonal relationships and group relations,
5. knows what the specifics of network communication, as technologies and digital media are changing the nature of relationships between different participants exchange information on the network,
6. knows what is the place and role in the functioning of mass media modern social system,
7. knows the most important theories of media effects, media use and the impact of media on interaction and social environment.
SKILLS
1. can recognize the sender's intentions, the factors and circumstances
conditioning its action, overt and hidden contents of communications,
ambiguity and multi-level structure of text, the different audiences, possible and probable effects of different messages in different social reference systems;
2. is able to analyze the discursive mechanisms of action, and deconstruct the importance of particular communication behaviors that man reconstruct, the "mental models" of sender, patterns of interaction, communication "forced" - different forms of symbolic power exercised by the media; telemetry studies;
3. knows how to explain the conditioning runs, processes and consequences of communication at the micro level (interpersonal interactions), medium (Interactions in small groups) and macro (mass communication insocial system), and changes in communication processes resulting from the development of a network society (Internet, convergence
media, multimedia).
OTHER COMPETENCES
1. understands the actions and communication strategies of different actors shaping the surrounding social reality
2. understands the motivations for taking up and pursuit of activities of communication in different social situations and contexts, as well as media compatibility with the basic social norms and ethical standards
3. is aware of models allowing programming own career in professional media world, including in particular identification, major barriers to career advancement and media success determinants
