Course of field geology 1300-OKGO1L

The course is a school of ‘geological’ thinking’ based on geological field observations. During the course, the students deepen knowledge and skills gained in the course in Physical Geology during the fall and spring semesters. Rules of collecting basic information for geological objects (sketches of outcrops, geological cross-sections and lithological columns) are laid out. Based on maps and field observations the students learn how to interpret the geological structure of the analyzed area. Standard geological measurements are presented and trained during the course. Emphasis is put on observations and recognition of the relationship between the morphology of an area and its geological structure. Basic tectonic structures are presented. Basic sedimentary structures and their significance for the interpretation of sedimentary environments are shown. Accent is put on skills used in synthesizing fragmentary geological observations and data. During the course, the students are acquainted with the geological structure and evolution of the western part of the Holy Cross Mountains. They gain experience in the macroscopic recognition of rocks and fossils.

Prerequisites (description)

The student should have basic knowledge in physical geology. Desired skills include: macroscopic recognition of basic types of rocks and rock-forming minerals, interpretation of simple geological maps, basic knowledge in palaeontology, particularly recognition of basic fossil invertebrate fossils.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student:
- conducts basic geological and topographic measurements indispensible in geological practice;
- recognizes basic tectonic structures and knows the rules of determining their age;
- distinguishes basic sedimentary structures and based on them draws conclusions on the sedimentary environments in which they formed;
- can individually prepare geological cross-section and logs;
- has skills to transform and interpret map data in relation to field observations;
- gains experience in macroscopic recognition of rocks and fossils;
- synthesizes detailed data for the interpretation of the evolution of a large area;
- has knowledge on the geological history and structure of the western part of the Holy Cross Mountains.

Assessment criteria

Final oral field test and final written test.
