Hydrology and hydraulics 1300-OHH2W
The lecture is designed to acquaint a student with:
- occurrence and role of water in nature,
- quantity of water resources,
- circulation of water in nature, in the surface and groundwater catchments
- basics of hydrographic, hydrological and meteorological research methods
- the river net, basic net parameters and river basins,
- catchment as a system and as an object of research,
- catchment water balance (precipitation, evaporation, runoff, retention) as the basis for water management in the catchment area
- relationship of surface water with groundwater,
- seasonality and variability of hydrological processes in a temperate climate,
- basics of water management in Poland,
- organization and tasks of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management and The Polish Hydrogeological Survey
- familiarization students with the basic laws of hydromechanics,
- basic principles of fluid behavior under the influence of external forces
- characteristics of the physical properties of water, then discusses are the basic laws of hydrostatics and hydrodynamics of a perfect fluid,
- the importance of non-Newtonian fluids in hydrology and hydrogeology
- the flow of water under pressure in closed pipes and water flow in open channels
- the basic law of water movement in soil.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course (lectures) a student:
- has knowledge of the occurrence and role of water in nature, quantity of water resources, in the surface and groundwater catchments
- gets to know the basic hydrographic, hydrological and meteorological research methods
- gets to know the characteristic of catchment as a system and as an object of research, the characteristic of the relationship of surface water with groundwater
- gets to know about general catchment water balance (precipitation, evaporation, runoff, retention) as the basis for water management in the catchment area and in Poland
- knows the function and tasks of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management and The Polish Hydrogeological Survey
- knows the basic laws of hydromechanics,
- has knowledge in the field of fluid behavior under the influence of external forces
- has knowledge concerning on characteristics of the physical properties of water, the basic laws of hydrostatics and hydrodynamics of a perfect fluid
- learns the terms of non-Newtonian fluids in hydrology and hydrogeology
- learns the laws regarding to the flow of water under pressure in closed pipes, water flow in open channels and the basic law of water movement in soil.
Assessment criteria
A written exam according to criteria established in the first class.
